Hoppin‘ John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and rice.
Zutaten
Skala
- 1 cup black-eyed peas, soaked overnight
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- 4 cups water or broth
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 smoked ham hock or bacon (optional)
Anweisungen
- Rinse and drain the black-eyed peas.
- In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
- Add onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
- Add black-eyed peas, water or broth, and ham hock or bacon.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
- Add rice, salt, and peppers. Stir well.
- Cover and cook on low for 20-25 minutes or until rice is tender.
- Remove ham hock, shred meat, and return to pot.
- Fluff rice and serve hot.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, omit the meat.
- Serve with cornbread for a complete meal.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
