Beschreibung

Hoppin‘ John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and rice.


Zutaten

  • 1 cup black-eyed peas, soaked overnight
  • 1 cup long-grain rice
  • 4 cups water or broth
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 smoked ham hock or bacon (optional)

Anweisungen

  1. Rinse and drain the black-eyed peas.
  2. In a pot, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
  4. Add black-eyed peas, water or broth, and ham hock or bacon.
  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes.
  6. Add rice, salt, and peppers. Stir well.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 20-25 minutes or until rice is tender.
  8. Remove ham hock, shred meat, and return to pot.
  9. Fluff rice and serve hot.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the meat.
  • Serve with cornbread for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
