A rich and flavorful French onion soup topped with melted cheese and crusty bread.

- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 8 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
- 1 bay leaf
- 8 slices of baguette
- 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese
Anweisungen
- Melt butter and olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add onions, salt, and sugar. Cook until onions are caramelized, about 30 minutes.
- Stir in wine and cook for 5 minutes.
- Add beef broth, thyme, and bay leaf. Simmer for 30 minutes.
- Preheat broiler. Place baguette slices on a baking sheet and broil until golden.
- Remove bay leaf from the soup. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with baguette and cheese.
- Broil the bowls until cheese is melted and bubbly.
Notes
- Use low-sodium beef broth for better flavor control.
- For a vegetarian version, substitute vegetable broth.
- Make sure to caramelize the onions well for depth of flavor.
